Airworthiness VS Mechanical Perfection

This update will veer from the norm here for a bit. As an instructor in an A&P program, I have been occasionally asked about airworthiness vs making it perfect. Although the engineer will desire mechanical perfection, the preferred state is airworthiness of any system on the aircraft. I have come up with an analogy to put this in perspective.

Airworthiness is a long term relationship, akin to spending your adult life with your high school sweetheart. It is a fruitful endeavor, mostly on the upside with a few disagreements that are quickly solved and forgiven. You are happy to see each other, and enjoy the companionship. A beneficial relationship for all involved.

Mechanical perfection is the attractive pole dancer at the high-end gentleman’s club. Pleasing to the eye, alluring, but does nothing but drain your wallet and leave you frustrated at the end of the night with nothing to show for it.
